Introducing the High School Racing Prep Group
Westminster Sailing in conjunction with CGSC has launched something new this month: a High School Racing Prep Group – a focused training track for middle school sailors who want to step beyond recreational sailing and start developing the skills, instincts, and mindset needed for real high-school racing.
This is not a casual learn to sail program. It’s a specific progression designed for motivated sixth through ninth graders who want to learn fast, think tactically, and train with purpose.
What This Program Does
Sailors begin in ILCA 4s, the single-handed platform used worldwide to build technical sailboat racing competence and confidence. As they progress, they’ll transition into the two-person 420 to learn teamwork, communication, and race-course dynamics.
Every session includes competitive elements – starting lines, time-on-distance, small-course racing, and decision-making under pressure. The goal is simple: make the fundamentals automatic so real progress can start.
Who It’s Built For
This group works best for sailors who are:
• Coachable and curious.
• Ready for structure and higher expectations.
• Able to handle a faster learning pace.
• Comfortable being challenged and pushed.
If a sailor needs a slower or more relaxed path, we’ll help families find the right alternative so nobody feels lost or overwhelmed.
Why This Matters
High school racing isn’t something you improvise. The sailors who succeed are the ones who build skills early, learn to manage competitive pressure, and understand how races actually unfold. The High School Racing Prep Group gives young sailors a runway – not just to make the team, but to contribute from day one.
We’re building future varsity sailors, not ballast.
What’s Ahead
Training is on Monday and Wednesday afternoons at Coconut Grove Sailing Club. ILCA boats are provided, the pace is quick, and the expectation is consistent growth.
Families with questions can reach out anytime as we shape this program into a true development pipeline for Westminster’s sailboat racing future.
